Quick Feed Estimate

Example Calculations

Two examples showing exactly how to plan sack purchases for your next feeding period — a 10-pig grower batch over 60 days, and a 30-pig finisher batch over 45 days.

Quick Estimate vs. Full Feed Cost Calculator — which to use?

Use the Quick Feed Estimate when you need a fast answer: “How many sacks should I buy this week?” It assumes a constant daily intake and a flat price — no stages, no breeds. Use the Feed Cost Calculator when you want a full breakdown by starter, grower, and finisher stages with breed adjustments and mode comparisons. Both tools are useful — the quick estimator is for operational planning; the full calculator is for financial planning.

Example 1 of 2

Grower Batch — 10 Pigs, 60 Days, ₱1,600/Sack

A smallholder with 10 grower pigs (25–60 kg stage) needs to know how many sacks to buy for a 2-month feeding period before market day. The pigs eat approximately 2 kg per pig per day during the grower phase. Feed costs ₱1,600 per 50 kg sack at the local dealer.

Feed price per sack₱1,600 (50 kg sack)

What this means

For 60 days with 10 grower pigs, you need 24 sacks — that is ₱38,400 in feed cost, or roughly ₱640 per day. Plan to have this cash available before you start the feeding period. Buying all 24 sacks at once may qualify you for a dealer discount; buying week-by-week costs more in transport and may expose you to price fluctuations.

The daily cost of ₱640 is a useful number for cash flow management. If you are paid monthly or bimonthly (e.g. from another job), you need to set aside ₱19,200 per month for feed alone during this period.

Note that this estimate assumes a flat 2 kg/day throughout the 60 days. In reality, grower pigs start eating slightly less (1.6–1.8 kg/day at 25 kg) and end eating more (2.2–2.5 kg/day near 60 kg). The quick estimate averages this — for more precise stage-by-stage numbers, use the Feed Cost Calculator.

Bisaya / Cebuano

How to adjust for your situation

  • Add 5–10% buffer sacks for wastage: Pigs spill feed, especially from trough-style feeders without lips. A 5% wastage buffer means buying 26 sacks instead of 24. Nipple-style feeders cut wastage significantly.
  • Feed price changed to ₱1,400/sack: Daily cost drops to ₱560 (instead of ₱640), saving ₱4,800 for the batch. Enter the updated price to recalculate instantly.
  • Piglets eating less at 25 kg (1.6 kg/day)? Enter 1.8 kg/day as a conservative average for the whole grower phase — the true intake ramps up from 1.6 to 2.2+ kg over 60 days, so 1.8 as a flat average gives a slightly conservative (safer) sack count.

Example 2 of 2

Finisher Batch — 30 Pigs, 45 Days, ₱28/kg (Bulk Rate)

A larger operation finishing 30 commercial pigs for 45 days (the last leg before market, 70→100 kg). They buy finisher feed directly from a distributor at ₱28/kg (no sack markup). This scenario shows per-kg pricing and how a shorter, intensive finishing period works financially.

Daily intake per pig3.0 kg/day (finisher stage typical)

Daily cost for batch₱2,520/day30 pigs × ₱84/day
Sacks needed81 sacksceil(4,050 ÷ 50 kg) — rounded up

What this means

A 45-day finishing run with 30 pigs requires 81 sacks of finisher feed and costs ₱113,400 — roughly ₱2,520 per day. At this scale, cash flow is the main risk: you need to have ₱113,400 available or committed before the period starts. Farms that run this size on credit (sacks on utang) often pay ₱30–₱32/kg instead of ₱28/kg, adding ₱8,100–₱16,200 to the batch cost.

The bulk rate of ₱28/kg vs the typical ₱32/kg sack price saves:

  • ₱4/kg × 4,050 kg = ₱16,200 saved for this batch alone
  • At 2 batches per year for 30 pigs: ₱32,400 in annual savings

This is why negotiating bulk pricing is worth the effort even for medium-scale farms. The saving per sack sounds small (₱200), but at 81 sacks per batch it is ₱16,200 — more than enough to cover medicine costs for the entire finishing run.

Bisaya / Cebuano

How to adjust for your situation

  • Pigs not all eating 3.0 kg yet? If some pigs just entered the finisher stage at 65 kg, their daily intake is closer to 2.5 kg. Use 2.7 kg as the average for the first half of a 45-day period to get a slightly more conservative sack count.
  • Market timing: A 45-day finishing period is long enough to target a specific market date (e.g. Christmas, fiestas). Back-calculate from your target sale date to find when pigs should enter the finisher stage.
  • Want to compare at ₱32/kg sack price? Re-enter with ₱1,600/sack (₱32/kg) to see the cost difference instantly — useful for deciding whether to pay for delivery from a bulk supplier or buy locally.
  • Need the full picture? The Quick Feed Estimate only covers the 45-day finisher leg. To see total feed cost from piglet to market weight (starter + grower + finisher), use the Feed Cost Calculator.
